Beneficial Use Impairments (BUIs) are a set of 14 different parameters used when designating an Area of Concern (AOC) under the U.S. \u2013 Canada Great Lakes Water Quality Agreement<\/a>.<\/p>\n

The St. Marys River was identified as an Area of Concern<\/a> because 9 out of 14<\/strong> beneficial uses were considered to be impaired, and 1 <\/strong>required further assessment.<\/p>\n

Today, 6 out of the 14<\/strong> possible impairments remain on the Canadian Side of the river, and 3 out of 14<\/strong> remain on the U.S. Side.<\/p>\n
