Continued environmental stewardship and monitoring help ensure these positive conditions are maintained for future generations.

Why This BUI Was Listed

When the Stage 2 Remedial Action Plan was developed, there was not enough information available to determine whether birds and other wildlife in the St. Marys River Area of Concern were experiencing deformities or reproductive problems linked to environmental contamination.

At the time, only a small number of observations had been documented, including three cross-bill common tern chicks observed on Lime Island in 1998. Because a comprehensive assessment of bird and animal populations had not yet been completed, this beneficial use was categorized as “Requires Further Assessment.”

Scientists recognized that contaminants such as PCBs, mercury, dioxins, furans, and other persistent pollutants had caused reproductive problems in wildlife elsewhere in the Great Lakes. Additional monitoring was needed to determine whether similar impacts were occurring in the St. Marys River.

What Has Changed

To better understand the health of local wildlife populations, Environment and Climate Change Canada’s Ecotoxicology and Wildlife Health Division conducted four years of research on colonial waterbirds within and outside the Area of Concern.

Researchers examined common terns and herring gulls, assessing:

Physical deformities in chicks and adults

Reproductive success

Egg contamination levels

Exposure to contaminants such as PCBs, dioxins, furans, mercury, and PBDEs

Differences between birds nesting inside and outside the Area of Concern

The results were encouraging.

Researchers found:

No physical deformities in common tern or herring gull chicks or adults.

Very low rates of embryonic deformities.

No significant differences between colonies inside and outside the Area of Concern.

Contaminant concentrations that were too low to cause adverse effects on development or reproduction.

Reproductive success comparable to other locations across the region.

These findings demonstrated that wildlife populations within the St. Marys River were not being negatively affected by contamination-related deformities or reproductive problems

Redesignated to Not Impaired on the Canadian Side

Based on the results of four years of scientific study, the Bird and Animal Deformities or Reproductive Problems BUI was officially redesignated to “Not Impaired” in 2016.

This redesignation reflects that:

No evidence of contamination-related deformities was found in the species studied.

Reproductive success within the Area of Concern was comparable to populations outside the Area of Concern.

Contaminant levels were not high enough to cause adverse impacts on development or reproduction.

The studies completed the assessment that was originally identified as necessary in the Stage 2 Remedial Action Plan.

Because the research demonstrated that bird and wildlife populations are reproducing normally and are not experiencing contaminant-related deformities, this beneficial use is no longer considered impaired.

Current Status: Not Impaired Bird and Animal Deformities or Reproductive Problems is no longer considered a concern within the Canadian portion of the St. Marys River Area of Concern.
