While occasional litter or naturally occurring debris may still be observed, these conditions are not considered evidence of impairment and are common in many natural waterways.

The redesignation of this BUI reflects decades of collaborative work by governments, Indigenous communities, industry, environmental organizations, and local residents to improve and protect the St. Marys River.

Why This BUI Was Listed

The Degradation of Aesthetics BUI evaluates whether visible pollution affects people’s enjoyment of the river. This includes concerns such as oil sheens, floating debris, excessive litter, unnatural colours, objectionable odours, and other conditions that make the waterway appear polluted.

When the St. Marys River was designated an Area of Concern, visible signs of pollution were common in some locations. Historical industrial activities, municipal discharges, combined sewer overflows, and urban runoff contributed to aesthetic concerns throughout portions of the river.

Residents and visitors occasionally observed debris, oil slicks, and other visible indicators of environmental degradation. These conditions affected public perception of the river and suggested that water quality improvements were needed.

Because of these concerns, Degradation of Aesthetics was identified as a Beneficial Use Impairment.

What Has Changed

Over the past several decades, significant improvements have been made to water quality and shoreline conditions throughout the St. Marys River.

Actions contributing to these improvements include:

Upgrades to municipal wastewater treatment systems.

Reductions in industrial discharges.

Improvements to stormwater management infrastructure.

Cleanup of contaminated sites and shorelines.

Community stewardship programs and shoreline cleanups.

Increased environmental regulations and pollution prevention measures.

To assess this BUI, researchers reviewed public complaints, environmental monitoring data, and observations of aesthetic conditions throughout the Area of Concern.

The assessments found that visible signs of pollution occur infrequently and are generally temporary in nature. Occasional debris or naturally occurring materials may still be observed, but there is no evidence of persistent aesthetic degradation caused by pollution.

Overall, the river’s appearance has improved substantially since the Area of Concern program began.

Status on the Canadian Side

On the Canadian side of the St. Marys River Area of Concern, aesthetics are no longer considered impaired.

Assessments found that:

Persistent oil sheens and other visible signs of pollution are no longer common.

Floating debris and litter are generally limited and localized.

No ongoing aesthetic issues attributable to industrial or municipal pollution were identified.

Environmental conditions are comparable to those found in similar Great Lakes waterways.

Monitoring and assessment activities identified through the Remedial Action Plan have been completed.

The available evidence indicates that the river’s appearance no longer reflects the conditions that originally led to this BUI being listed.

Redesignated to Not Impaired on the Canadian Side

Based on the results of environmental assessments and public observations, the Degradation of Aesthetics BUI was officially redesignated to “Not Impaired” in 2018.

This redesignation reflects that:

Persistent aesthetic impairments are no longer present.

Water quality and shoreline conditions have improved significantly.

Pollution prevention measures and cleanup efforts have been effective.

The assessment requirements identified through the Remedial Action Plan were successfully completed.

The redesignation confirms that the St. Marys River now provides an aesthetic experience that is comparable to other healthy Great Lakes waterways.

Current Status: Not Impaired Degradation of Aesthetics is not considered a concern within the Canadian portion of the St. Marys River Area of Concern.
